Nvidia Shield Is Gone? Or Is a New One Coming…
Since 2019 the Shield Pro has been king. It had its faults, like the Lack of AV1 decoding, and with apps getting bigger and bigger it has been running into problems. But it still did a lot more than the other options out there, especially for power users, and Nvidia kept the software support going this whole time.
Now Try to Buy one!

As of 9/29/2026 B&H Website showed out of stock👇

The tube-shaped base Shield TV went out of stock back in July. Nvidia said it was “largely out of stock due to demand” but didn’t say whether it would ever come back. The Pro was still around at the time. Not anymore. It’s now sold out at Best Buy, Walmart, B&H, Newegg, Micro Center, and even Nvidia’s own store. The few that show up in small stores or from third-party sellers are going for way over the $199 list price. Some are asking north of $500.
So is it gone?
Nobody knows, and that includes me. Nvidia hasn’t said the Shield is discontinued, and it hasn’t announced a new one either. What it has said is that the Shield platform will keep getting updates for more than 10 years. So if you already own one, you’re covered for now.
There are two ways to read this. Maybe Nvidia is clearing out stock before a refresh, and a new Shield with better specs (and hopefully AV1) is on the way. Or Nvidia is busy with its booming AI business and a little streaming box just isn’t a priority anymore. I’d love the first one to be true, but there’s nothing official to say it is.

Why it matters
The regular user who watches Netflix, Hulu and apps like that won’t miss it much. Almost any streaming stick does the job.
But if you’re a media enthusiast, a regular streaming device won’t cut it. I’m talking about:
- Plex
- TrueHD Atmos audio passthrough
- Lossless audio
- AI upscaling
That’s what made the Shield special, and very few boxes do all of it in one small package.

What are the options?
Apple TV 4K. It’s a very good streaming box and works great if you live in the Apple ecosystem. The problem is that it doesn’t let you do much else. It’s polished, but it’s locked down.
A computer. A mini PC would give you all the flexibility you want, but the price is the problem. It also takes more setup than plug and play.
Buying a Shield used or from a reseller. I wouldn’t at these prices. Paying double for a 2019 box feels wrong to me, no matter how good it is.

My take
If you already have a Shield, hold on to it, because it’s going to be supported for a long time. If you were about to buy one, I’d wait before paying scalper prices. Hopefully Nvidia surprises everybody with a new one. If not, we’ll be looking at other options.
What do you think? Are you keeping your Shield, or already looking at alternatives? Let me know in the comments.
