Nvidia Shield TV Pro Jumps to $299 — But Out of Stock?

Nvidia Shield TV Pro Jumps to $299 — But It’s Still Out of Stock

A couple of weeks ago, I asked whether the Nvidia Shield Pro was disappearing for good —

or whether Nvidia might finally be getting ready for something new.
Well, now we have an answer.
Sort of.

Nvidia apparently isn’t killing the Shield TV Pro.
Instead, it just raised the price.
The Shield TV Pro, which launched in 2019 for $199.99, is now officially listed by Nvidia at $299.
But here’s the weird part.
Nvidia’s own website still shows the Shield TV Pro as out of stock.
So we now have a new official price for a product that is still difficult to actually buy.

Nvidia Shield Pro: $199 to $299

This isn’t a new Shield.
There’s no new processor.
No extra RAM.
No additional storage.
No AV1 decoding.
The Shield TV Pro still uses the same core hardware from the 2019 model.
What changed is the price:
Old price: $199.99
New price: $299
That’s roughly a 50% increase.
Nvidia has pointed to higher component and memory costs as the reason for the increase.

The Regular Nvidia Shield Is Going Away

While the Shield TV Pro is apparently staying, the cheaper standard Shield TV is being discontinued.
That would leave the $299 Shield TV Pro as the only remaining Shield streaming device.
That makes the situation even stranger.
Instead of introducing a cheaper replacement or finally releasing updated hardware, Nvidia appears to be keeping the seven-year-old flagship alive — at a much higher price.

Why Does the Shield Still Matter?

Here’s the problem.
Even in 2026, the Shield Pro still does things that most streaming boxes don’t do very well.
For power users, it still offers:

GeForce NOW
That is one reason people have continued buying a streaming device originally released in 2019.
There still isn’t an obvious one-for-one replacement.

  • Plex Media Server support
  • Dolby Vision
  • Dolby Atmos
  • DTS:X
  • Lossless audio support
  • AI-enhanced upscaling
  • Gigabit Ethernet
  • Two USB 3.0 ports
  • Expandable storage

But $299 Changes the Conversation

At $199, I could understand the argument.
If you’re a Plex user, have a serious home-theater setup, or need advanced audio passthrough, the Shield Pro offers capabilities cheaper streaming devices don’t.
At $299, the question becomes much harder.
We’re talking about seven-year-old hardware competing against much newer devices from Apple, Google, Amazon, and Walmart.
Devices like the Apple TV 4K, Google TV Streamer, and onn 4K Pro cost considerably less.
They don’t necessarily replace every Shield feature, but for the average Netflix, YouTube, Disney+, Prime Video, or live-TV viewer, the Shield becomes much harder to justify.
And that’s before considering one of its biggest weaknesses in 2026:
No AV1 hardware decoding.

And It’s Still Out of Stock

This may be the most interesting part of the whole story.
Nvidia has already updated the official price to $299, but the product still shows as unavailable.
So what exactly is happening?
There are a few possibilities.
Nvidia may simply be preparing another production run at the higher price.
Component shortages may still be affecting supply.
Or Nvidia may be keeping the Shield alive in limited quantities because there is still enough demand from enthusiasts to justify it.
What this announcement does not give us is evidence of a new Nvidia Shield.
In fact, keeping the existing Shield Pro alive at a new price may actually make a new model look less likely in the immediate future.

Would I Pay $299?

For most people?

No.

At $299, you really need to know why you’re buying a Shield.

If you’re just watching Netflix, YouTube, Hulu, Prime Video, or other mainstream apps, there are much cheaper options.

But for people using Plex, local media libraries, advanced audio formats, and higher-end home-theater equipment, the Shield is still unusually difficult to replace.

And Nvidia apparently knows it.

That may be why a streaming box from 2019 can somehow become more expensive in 2026 instead of cheaper.

The Shield isn’t dead.

But at $299, it has become an even more specialized product.

And until Nvidia actually gets them back in stock, the story still isn’t finished.
